Set in Taishō-era Japan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba introduces us to Tanjiro Kamado, a kind and intelligent young boy who lives a simple, peaceful life in the mountains with his family. As the sole breadwinner after his father’s death, he makes a living by selling charcoal in a nearby village. His idyllic life is shattered when he returns home one winter day to a horrific sight: his entire family has been brutally massacred by a demon. The only survivor is his younger sister, Nezuko, but she has been transformed into a demon herself.

However, Nezuko exhibits a unique trait—she retains a flicker of her human consciousness and, most importantly, her deep love for her brother. She doesn’t succumb to her demonic urges to devour humans, a truly unprecedented and miraculous occurrence. Their struggle is witnessed by Giyu Tomioka, a member of the enigmatic Demon Slayer Corps, a secret organization dedicated to hunting and slaying demons. Recognizing the extraordinary bond between the siblings and Nezuko’s unique condition, Giyu spares them and directs Tanjiro to a retired Demon Slayer trainer, Sakonji Urokodaki.

Driven by a desire for vengeance for his family and a desperate hope to find a cure to turn his sister human again, Tanjiro begins a grueling two-year training regimen under Urokodaki. He learns the art of swordsmanship, including the “Water Breathing” style, and masters a special form of “Total Concentration Breathing” that dramatically enhances his physical abilities. Their ultimate goal is to find Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor of all demons and the one responsible for his family’s slaughter.
