Demon Lord, Retry! follows the story of Akira Ōno, a seemingly ordinary working adult who is, in reality, the administrator and creator of the popular online role-playing game, Infinity Game. On the day the game is scheduled to be permanently shut down after 15 years, Akira logs in for one final time. However, a mysterious event transports him into the game’s world, but not as himself—he is now inhabiting the body of his high-level, over-powered character: Hakuto Kunai, the infamous Demon Lord.

Awakening in a dense forest in this new world, he is a towering, intimidating figure with a powerful, sinister aura. The world he finds himself in is a living, breathing version of his game, but with real consequences and people. Soon after his arrival, he encounters a young, mistreated girl named Aku, who is being hunted by a powerful demon. Displaying his immense power as the Demon Lord, Kunai effortlessly dispatches the monster, saving Aku. From this point on, she accompanies him on his journey, completely convinced he is a genuine and benevolent Demon Lord.

Despite his fearsome appearance and his terrifying reputation, Kunai’s personality remains that of the calm and sensible Akira Ōno. He is kind to those in need, particularly Aku, and uses his overwhelming power not for conquest, but to help people and solve the various social and political problems of this new world. As his reputation spreads, he attracts the attention of various powerful entities, including the Three Holy Maidens, who see him as a threat to their kingdom, and other figures from his old game who have also been transported into this world. With Aku and a growing cast of allies, he navigates this chaotic fantasy realm, using his “administrator” knowledge from the game to his advantage, all while trying to figure out how he got there and, perhaps, how to get back home.
